Welcome to the new Choices. The AAEA Executive Board has adopted a broadened internet outreach program to disseminate sound economic analysis and information on significant economic and policy issues important to the public, business and policy makers. This program involves three separate products. First, a quarterly Choices publication, of which this is the first, will focus on national issues and present themed sets of articles as well as individual papers. Second, a series of monthly Policy Issues articles will be posted to this web site to provide timely analyses on topics of high current interest. Third, these public elements of outreach will be supplemented by AAEA members sharing among themselves materials useful for educational programs, increasing the profession’s ability to provide timely analyses and information on a larger variety of topics.
This issue of Choices celebrates the contribution of agricultural economists and others to the analyses of the economic consequences of climate change and adaptation to mitigate its impacts on agriculture and natural resources. The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for its contributions to better understanding of climate change and its implications. The authors of this series of articles are among the agricultural economists and other scientists who have contributed analyses to the IPCC process and served as lead authors in its publications. A separate article addresses market-based approaches to CO2, especially carbon emissions trading and incentives for carbon sequestration as policy options. We trust that you will find these articles informative and insightful as you consider possible business strategies and public policies designed to deal with the issues involved.
We encourage submissions of proposals for future themed sets of papers, individual articles and timely policy issues analyses. Submit theme proposals and policy issues proposals to Walter J. Armbruster, walt@farmfoundation.org, and individual papers for the quarterly Choices to Clement Ward, clement.ward@okstate.edu. We look forward to working with you to address important economic and policy issues affecting food, farms, resources and rural communities.
