Farm Service Agency (FSA) borrowers are generally assessed as “marginal” clients under commercial lending standards. Notably, even when FSA adjusted its creditworthiness criteria with greater leniency than regular banks, its socially disadvantaged borrowers are still generally less creditworthy than their White borrowing peers.

Using Census of Agriculture data, we compare participation in and use of agricultural programs and credit markets across farm classified by principal operator race and ethnicity. Average differences in program use and interest expenses across the groups are largely explained by discrepancies in program and credit market participation rates.

We summarize the distribution of weighted, reported MFP payments using the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) Phase III dataset from 2018 to 2020. We present payments by race, sex, beginning farmer, and limited resource status to provide insight into how reported payments varied across farmer characteristics.

In the wake of recent social justice movements, consumers are increasingly aligning their purchasing behavior with moral convictions, such as supporting marginalized producers. This article explores consumer preferences for food produced by Black entrepreneurs and compares those preferences to the commonly desired attribute of local production.

Latino/a immigrant farmers face barriers to market participation and sales. Higher participation is associated with greater investments in farmland, equipment, and livestock. Trainings boost involvement, while both Spanish and Anglo acculturation reduce participation. Key sales factors are acres planted, employees, and income, with Anglo acculturation and community climate negatively associated with sales.
